About our speaker:

In 2023, Joel founded SoulRoots, a spiritual formation and soul-care ministry, where he serves as Executive Director. An ordained pastor and spiritual director with over 20 years of ministry experience, Joel integrates diverse spiritual practices and traditions to help individuals deepen their relationship with Father, Son, and Spirit. In ministry, he takes a holistic approach, exploring the interplay of spirituality, culture, and ethnicity—and how they shape identity and faith.

Born to Southeast Asian refugee parents, Joel brings a unique perspective as a second-generation Asian American. He understands the complexities of navigating cultural identity, family expectations, and societal pressures, as well as the impacts of marginalization and systemic oppression on faith and self-perception.

Joel is especially passionate about walking alongside adults who feel stuck in their spiritual journey, helping them integrate their experiences and discover a fuller sense of self in Christ. 

He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Lisa, and their two teenage kids, Kaden and Addysen. As a family, they love traveling, exploring new food spots, and cheering on the Portland Timbers.
